Zavod ORELI Slovenia

Non-profit organization Oreli was founded in January 2010 with the intention of accelerating and professionalizing the development of volunteer and self-help groups, forming new ways of helping the elderly and the disabled, finding new ways of cohabitation, and cultivating cross-generational symbiosis and aid. Its beginnings can be traced back to 2006 when the intensive formation of in practice volunteer and self-help groups began. The organization was founded on the basis of quality professional work in practice. The high number of services provided in practice demonstrated a greater need for organizational activities that were possible to control within the framework of the organization.

In recognition of our merits in the field of volunteering, our group of young volunteers was awarded a decoration for the best volunteering project in Slovenia by the president of the Republic of Slovenia, Danilo Türk, in Brdo pri Kranju in June 2010. We also won a Benefactor of the Year award presented by the Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, and Naša žena magazine. At a conference organized in December 2010 by ZDUS (joint alliance of pensioners of Slovenia) and KAD (Kapitalska družba; manages pension funds) our system was praised for its quality and potential. It was recognized as developmentally most potential model of providing aid to the elderly in practice. Our great practical success was given coverage in the media, TV Slovenia, Radio Slovenia, POP TV, local TV, and various newspapers, among others.

We have founded the first successful Counseling office with the support of ICT for the elderly, which is located at 23 Tomšičeva ulica, 1240 Kamnik, and in November 2012 we celebrated the first year of its existence. We have also launched an informative web site for the elderly (www.kamnik-starejsi.si), which consists of the modules Volunteer and Opinion, among others. With the help of the module Volunteer the user can send a request for a volunteer, who would then assist the user, and when the user wants to state their opinion, the user can do this through the Opinion module.

We regularly coordinate 15 volunteer and self-help groups at a local level. Among these 15 groups are also five primary school volunteer groups, one high school volunteer group, one student volunteer group, and the rest are groups where the elderly are active. At the local level, we also coordinate 13 institutions which are concerned with the help for the elderly.
